Military appointment certificates, 1823-1826.

Certificates (2), 1823-1824 and 1826. The first certificate appointed Dibble Ensign in the 176th Regiment of New York Infantry, effective May 16, 1823. It was signed by Joseph C. Yates, Governor of N.Y., and Archibald Campbell, Deputy Secretary, on Dec. 1, 1823. The certificate includes a seal with an eagle ringed with the word "Excelsior." The promotion passed the secretary's office on Dec. 4, 1823. A note on the back of the certificate, in ink, states that Colby took the necessary oath on June 11, 1824 before James Simpson, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. An additional note, in pencil, states that Dibble was related to Gen. Parhouse (sp?). The second certificate appointed Dibble a lieutenant in the same regiment as of Sept. 20, 1826. The certificate was signed by DeWitt Clinton, Governor of N.Y., and N. F. Beck, Adj. Gen., on Sept. 11, 1826. The certificate was officially stamped. A note on the back of the certificate states that Colby took the oath on Sept. 30, 1826, as certified and signed by Lot Alderman, State Col. of the 176th regiment. The certificates are printed forms with additional information added in handwriting.
